Summer 2011

A busy summer, and reassuring to see a number of events growing again after a couple of years treading water to survive what many saw as the contraction of the market.

Our main investment over the summer has been in more staging, with another £12,000 of Litedeck making it's way into our hire stock. This versatile system continues to prove it's worth, with a number of clients discussing 2012 contracts already.

Parade Stage at Cowes Week 2011

X-Factor Live Tour 2011

With rehearsals starting in early February followed by 57 shows in 15 venues over the following 8 weeks, making this year's X-Factor Live tour the biggest yet.

Once again the tour showcased some of the finalists from the series which culminated just before Christmas with winner Matt Cardle being crowned, including Matt, Rebecca Ferguson, One Direction and Cher Lloyd. For the third year running we supplied PA rigging services, radio analysis systems and frequency planning for the tour.

JLS Outta This World Tour

Running from November 2010 through to late January 2011, with a short break for Christmas, was the JLS Outta This World arena tour. The 40 date sold-out tour covered the major UK arenas together with the o2 in Dublin, for which we supplied radio services, analysis systems and frequency planning for the tour.

A 3D movie of the show was shot at the o2 in London to be released later this year.

Meanwhile we're heading straight back out on tour again on another major UK and Ireland tour... 57 shows in 14 venues over 7 weeks... more coming soon!

Happy New Year!

A belated one perhaps but we've been busy on tour since November, taking a short breather for Christmas then straight back into it after New Year's Day.

We're starting to look to the summer ahead, and once again asking customers to contact us early to avoid disappointment - there's only so many weekends in the summer season and we inevitably get a lot of last minute requests for equipment.

So much so that we're offering a 5% discount on equipment hire (sound, lighting, staging, power) for customers who book before 30th March.

Contact us today on 01983 779337.

Papal Visit

Possibly one of the most exciting and unique events we’ve been involved with has been the Papal Visit to Cofton Park in Birmingham. Working for the main audio contractor we supplied PA rigging services for the event, undertaking the necessary work at height as required.

Despite which threw severe weather at the build-up in the week prior, the event was an absolute success, with all parties including the BBC, offering their praise.

Here’s a few facts from the event:

  • 23 hangs of PA for an expected audience of 80,000
  • a worldwide audience of millions
  • a choir of over 2,000
  • over 200 power amplifiers
  • 3km of fibre optic feeding audio and data between the stage, B-stage, FOH and delay rings

Summer Madness 2010

Once again we’ve supplied a communications system to the Summer Madness event featuring Paul Weller, held again in Carisbrooke.

We’ve supplied 50 Motorola GP340s together with a range of accessories including noise-cancelling headsets and D-shell earpieces. In addition to this we supplied a further two radio systems to events also taking place over the same weekend.

This year also had the added challenge with a request from production for a solution to a lack of telephones in the production office on site. With the nearest building some ¼ mile away, and the event just three days away our team worked tirelessly to build, prove and install a 2.4GHz point-to-point data link to provide the backbone over which a VOIP (Voice Over IP) telephone system could be installed. Just over 36 hours after the initial request our engineers were on site deploying the system.

We’ve already started exploring the additional benefits the system could provide in future years.

Summer 2010

June, as ever, has been a busy month. It all started with the Capital Radio Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium turning round 13 artists in just four hours. This was hotly followed by the Isle of Wight Festival the following weekend, where we took to the main stage for the 6th year running.

Late June saw us step onto the P!nk stadium tour, looking after PA in Limerick, Coventry’s Ricoh Arena and Alton Towers in Early July. Our summer run on the mainland came to a close PA rigging for culmination of The Prodigy’s Invaders Must Die Tour at Milton Keynes Bowl.

We saw the rest of August out with work back on the Isle of Wight, including Will Young and the 80’s night (yes, a bit of a contrast to the Prodigy two weeks earlier) at Osborne House, and once again one of our favourite small events on the Island Dance on the Duver supplying PA, lighting and fireworks.

We’re already starting to look forward to projects in 2011, with a number of jobs confirmed for later this year in the run up to Christmas carrying on into the New Year.

X-Factor 2010

8 acts, 54 shows, 52 days. We’ve just got back from the X-Factor Live Arena Tour, showcasing 8 of the live show acts from the TV shows just before Christmas, including finalists Stacey Solomon, Olly Murs and winner Joe McElderry.

Haiti Appeal Concert

Saturday 6th February saw the Haiti Appeal Concert at Cowes Yacht Haven for a night of fine music and fundraising for the earthquake appeal.

We donated a PA and monitor system together with FOH and monitor engineers for the night.

The concert featured a performance by Bestival favourites The Chancers, chosen as the UK’s most inspired unsigned band by Radio One listeners and Bestival curator Rob Da Bank. The Kurves, The Guy Page Trio and indie pop band Majortones also appeared on stage.

Around £4,000 was donated to the appeal on the night.

Isle of Wight Chamber Awards

The 30th November saw the annual Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Awards held at Cowes Yacht Haven. This year marked our first year working with the Chamber on the awards, providing a range of services:

  • Audio - for the awards ceremony itself, music throughout the evening and for the live entertainment into the night
  • Lighting - a mixture of intelligent (including Martin Mac 550s and Mac 250s) and conventional lighting fixtures (including ETC Source 4s, PAR 56/64s and Fresnels), plus followspot.
  • Video Screens - we provided 2 12'x8' screens and projectors for a mixture of live video content and pre-produced footage which was supplied by local video company CDR Filming.
  • Power Distro
  • Stage Pyro - opening the event with a bang was a mixture of pyrotechnics located around the stage and video screens
  • Rigging - with no flying capacity in the roof we designed and supplied a custom ground support structure to meet the Chamber's requirements for branding placement in addition to supporting lighting fixtures and video screens.
Feedback from the event was excellent, and we look forward to working with the IW Chamber of Commerce on future projects in 2010.

Summer Madness 2009

We're supplying on-site communications for production and site for the Madness event down at Carisbrooke Castle this weekend, with the provision of nearly 50 Motorola GP340 licensed radios, together with spare batteries and multi-chargers. We're also supplying a number of noise-cancelling headsets for use in noisy environments.

We've also got another smaller stock of radios out at one of the Island's last carnivals for the summer.

On the move...

Well, we've had to move into larger premises in order to effectively deal with the rising number of orders and jobs. In an ideal world, this would have happened over the winter months when we were a little quieter but it just took a little longer than expected.

So, we'll get some photos onto the website once we're moved in properly. In the meantime if you visit us you'll have to excuse things not being as well organised as we'd like.

For collecting and returning equipment (the correspondence/registered office address remains unchanged):

Spyder UK Ltd
Unit 3, Harbour Industrial Estate, Bembridge
Isle of Wight  PO35 5NR

Please note that althought the old phone number will continue to function for some time to come, our new phone number is 01983 779337 (01983 SPYDER).
